At Netley Abbey Runners, we talk a lot about community, encouragement, and enjoying running at every level — and that’s all made possible by the dedication of our Run Leaders and Coaches.
They’re the ones who map out the sessions, greet every runner with a smile, keep us safe, and somehow manage to keep morale high even during that final uphill rep. But have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenesto become a Run Leader or Coach?
Let’s take a look at what our amazing team have done to earn those titles — and why we think they’re absolute stars ⭐
Every Run Leader at Netley Abbey Runners has taken the time to complete the Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF)qualification, delivered by England Athletics.
This isn’t just a tick-box course — it covers:
The course is a blend of online learning and a virtual classroom session, and our leaders all made the commitment to fit it in around work, family, and (of course) their own running.
Once qualified, they’re covered by insurance, supported by the club, and confident in their ability to lead sessions in a fun, safe, and inclusive way.
And from then on, they’re part of the magic that makes this club what it is.
Some of our members have gone one step further and qualified as Coaches in Running Fitness (CiRF)— a more advanced qualification that allows them to coach runners towards specific goals, build long-term training plans, and offer more personalised support.
The CiRF journey includes:
It takes time, effort, and dedication — and we’re proud to have Coaches within our club who’ve taken on that challenge to help support others with confidence and care.
We’re incredibly grateful for the people who give their time, energy, and passion to make sure every session runs smoothly — literally. They keep us motivated, safe, and often laughing. Whether it’s guiding a Couch to 5k group, planning a fun relay, or reminding us to take it steady on the hills, our leaders and coaches are always looking out for others.
Netley Abbey Runners simply wouldn’t be the same without them.
If you're ever curious about becoming a Run Leader yourself, just have a quiet word with one of the team — we’re always happy to chat about what’s involved and how the club can support you. It’s not about being the fastest or most experienced — just someone who loves running and wants to help others enjoy it too.
